Statement

Role Play Series - Summer 2013

In these new paintings I’m still acknowledging the contradictions I find in contemporary life, while ultimately striving for UNITY. Right now, I am helped along by using the hexagonal grid. It allows me to find pathways that appear to be forming contradictory structures, but actually they are all the same at the base level. I call this the “Role Play Series”, because, using shapes and structures as metaphors for human beings , we are all made out of the same units and yet there is an amazing way that units can re-combine, that certain characteristics isolate and manifest . This grid and creating the diagonal division also helped me find a way of working with dichotomies. I need to allow that into my working method, different ways of using space, using paint, using tightness and looseness both. The grid allows me to explore lots of things, while providing a stability that makes me feel more relaxed when I am starting to work. When I improvise, which is typically part of my approach, it now takes place within the system. Once I know what I’m dealing with then I can play, finding different ways of moving from here to there; the curvy way, the angular way. Reconciling the intuitive and the intellectual my work is my lifelong struggle, in every respect. That’s what leads to creativity, those conflicts smashing up against one another.
